So today on our lesson we are going to make a trip to a wonderful country situated on a green continent. . Try to guess what  we are going to speak about. It is a very interesting, unusual country. What country is it? What is the theme of our lesson? Look at the maps, please.

The name of the country comes from Latin word «australis» which mean southern. It is located in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is supposed that Australia’s native inhabitants, the Aborigines, arrived in Australia at least 40,000 years ago. The Dutch were the first Europeans to visit Australia in 1606. But the continent was not settled till the English captain James Cook discovered the East Coast of Australia in 1770.

Australia is the largest island in the world and the smallest continent. It is the sixth large country in the world.  Its area is about 8 mln square km. Australia lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is situated about 11 000 km southwest of North America and about 8200 km southeast of mainland Asia.

The continent of Australia is mostly a great plain with mountains in the east and south-east. The western part of the continent forms a plateau which occupies half of the continent. There are two hot deserts in the central and western parts of the continent the Great Sandy Desert, the Great Victoria Desert. The greatest rivers are the Murray and the Darling.

The country’s official name is Commonwealth of Australia. The commonwealth is formally headed by the British Queen. The national language is English. The population of Australia is about 18 mln. Today Australia is an independent federative state consisting of 6 states – New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia and 2 territories – the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.

The capital of the country is Canberra. Canberra was specially planned as the capital. All the government buildings are situated there. There’re no industrial plants in the city. About 300,000 people live in Canberra. The largest cities are Sidney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth. These cities are also the country’s main ports. There are five big cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Each city is the capital of the state in which it is situated:

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales. Sydney is the oldest and largest city in Australia. It was founded in 1788. It is the leading industrial city with the population of about 3,000,000 people.

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria. It is the world’s most livable city. It has about 3,000,000 people.

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. It is a year-round vocation place. The population is about 1,400,000 people.

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia. It is a pretty and industrial city. The population is 1,100,000 people.

Perth is the capital of Western Australia. It is a one of the best climates in Australia. Its population is 1,200,000 people.

Hobart is the capital of island-state Tasmania. Its population is about 200,000 inhabitants.

Australia is one of the world’s developed countries. Australia has modern factories, highly productive mines and farms. It is the world’s leading producer of wool. It also produces and exports large amounts of  minerals and farm goods.
