Warm-up and Objective Discussion

There is a desk in front of the board. Students are in two lines from both sides of the desk. There is a hotel bell on the desk.  There are sentences on the board in Past Simple with mistakes. First students in lines look at one sentence and if one of them knows how to correct the sentence s/he presses the bell and says the right version. If it is wrong, the other students may say his/her variant. Then they both go to the end of line and the game continues.

Teacher tells that last lessons students learned how to make questions in Past Simple and today they will practice the questions.

Teacher has a sentence on the board: I went to Turkey last summer.

Together with the class s/he builds new questions by adding question words and verb to be.

Did you go anywhere last summer?

Where did you go last summer?

When did you go there?

How did you go there?

How many times did you go there?

Why did you go there?

Were you anywhere last summer?

Teacher elicits the information about V1 in questions from the students.

S/he also pays their attention and reminds them about to be and no any other verbs in questions.

1.      Fill in the blanks. Students fill in the blanks using the correct form of the verbs given under the task individually. Then they check the task in pairs and then they check it together with the teacher.

2.      Open the brackets and write questions. The same procedure, students work individually, and then check the task in pairs, then the whole class checks together with the teacher.

1.      Students work in groups of 2-3 people. They have several scrambled sentences, when each word is on a separate piece of paper so they should literally build the sentences. Teacher decides if each group should have the same or different sentences. They unscramble the sentences and groups go clockwise to check work of other groups. (For example, there are 6 groups, each group goes to the next desk to see if other groups’ work is correct) They walk and check till they come back to their tables. Teacher walks around and watches students working as well as helps if necessary. Of, course teacher decides on the amount of sentences and it depends on a group.

2.      Students work in groups of 2-4 people. Each group has a pile of cards with verbs face down on the desk and a dice. There are question words on the board for each number of the dice dots, e.g. 1 – why, 2 – where, 3 – when, 4 – how, 5 – what, 6 – how many. One student rolls the dice, takes a verb and makes a question in Past Simple. Teacher does the same job with walking around, listening and gathering good and bad examples which will be discussed after students finish.
